Practice Depreciation with 6 accounting challenges on Accountely — instant IAS/IFRS-compliant scored feedback on every submission.

What depreciation covers

Depreciation allocates the cost of a long-lived asset over the periods that benefit from its use. It is an allocation process, not a valuation one — the carrying amount after depreciation is not a market value. The method chosen should reflect the pattern in which the asset's economic benefits are consumed, whether straight line, reducing balance, or units of production.

These challenges cover computing the charge under each method, part-year acquisitions and disposals, and revisions to useful life or residual value.

Where marks are usually lost

  • Depreciating below residual value.
  • Applying a revised useful life retrospectively — a change in estimate is prospective, spread over the remaining life.
  • Charging a full year on an asset acquired mid-year when the policy requires apportionment.
